Water collecting beneath a stopcock can originate at the valve or run down a pipe from somewhere else. From a safe, accessible position, look for the first fresh moisture rather than just the lowest drip. A photograph showing the handle, body and both pipe connections helps explain what needs checking.

Include whether the handle turns normally and whether it has successfully shut off the supply before. These observations help plan the visit, but a photograph cannot establish the internal condition of an old valve.
What the location of the leak can mean
Moisture around the spindle can indicate a seal problem; moisture at the inlet or outlet can indicate a connection issue. Corrosion, cracks or other damage to the valve body may make replacement more appropriate. A leaking connection can also involve the adjoining pipe, so the condition of both needs inspection.
A stopcock that turns but does not stop the flow presents an additional problem. A working handle is not proof that the valve seals internally. Conversely, a valve can shut off the downstream supply while still leaking on its inlet side. Describe both the water escaping externally and what happens at the taps if you have already observed it.
Avoid forcing a seized or damaged control

If your valve will not turn normally, stop rather than extending the handle, striking it or applying increasing force.
Do not tighten every visible nut or loosen the assembly in an attempt to release it. If an old fitting or short pipe fails, the water can escape before you have a reliable way to stop it. Contain a small drip only where it is safe, move vulnerable belongings and tell the plumber that the isolation valve itself is the problem.
How the water is isolated for a stopcock repair
The person carrying out the repair needs a suitable way to control the supply upstream of the faulty component. Depending on the building, that may involve another private isolation point, a communal arrangement or coordination with the water supplier. The method must be established for the actual installation rather than assumed from a nearby cover.

Repair the existing valve or replace it?
A local seal or connection repair may be possible when the body and adjoining pipework remain sound. Replacement can be sensible where the valve is damaged, unreliable or too deteriorated for a dependable repair. The assessment should distinguish a cosmetic surface deposit from evidence of an active fault.
If replacing the stopcock, access and pipe condition influence what else is needed. A valve hidden behind a fixed cupboard panel or sitting close to a floor can require more preparation than one with clear working space. Discuss the position and future accessibility of the control, as well as the immediate leak.
What the completed repair should address
The objective is a watertight connection and a reliable way to isolate the intended supply. Ask which valve serves the property and whether any remaining limitations exist. A clear explanation is especially useful when multiple valves are present or the arrangement has changed during the work.
Where an opening is needed, agree the making-good scope. Keeping a working isolation point reachable is more useful than concealing it behind a permanent finish. For rented or managed premises, pass the location and any relevant instructions to the responsible person so future occupants or maintenance staff can identify it.
When to request urgent help
A small, stable drip still warrants repair, particularly if the valve cannot close. Escalate when the leak becomes a continuous flow, reaches electrical equipment or cannot be contained. A valve defect combined with another uncontrolled leak is especially urgent because the usual means of stopping the water may not work.

- Can I leave a bowl under it for a few weeks?
- A bowl contains visible drips but does not restore reliable isolation or prevent deterioration. Arrange an assessment, check that water is not escaping elsewhere and seek urgent help if the flow or surrounding risk increases.
