Replacing a hot water cylinder is a chance to check whether the stored hot water system still suits the property. Begin with the reason for changing it, then compare capacity, heating compatibility, access and the surrounding work. A matching height and diameter are only part of a sound replacement specification.

A leaking vessel, unreliable controls and insufficient hot water are different starting points. If the fault has not been diagnosed, establish it before committing to equipment. Water beside the cylinder might originate at a serviceable connection or from the safety discharge rather than from the vessel itself.

For an upgrade, describe the performance you need in ordinary terms: enough hot water for consecutive showers, better use of cupboard space or compatibility with a planned heating change. Distinguish those objectives from a preference for a particular brand. This gives the survey a useful brief and makes proposals easier to compare.

Record the existing system before choosing a replacement

A vented cylinder normally works with a storage cistern and open vent. An unvented cylinder is mains supplied and requires appropriate pressure and temperature safety arrangements. Changing between the two can alter the installation scope significantly, so it should not be treated as simply ordering a newer tank.

Heating arrangements matter too. A direct cylinder uses immersion heating, while an indirect cylinder receives heat through a coil from another source. Some systems have more than one input. A conventional combi installation generally supplies hot water without a separate cylinder; specialised arrangements need their own design assessment.

Give the surveyor equipment labels and previous installation documents where available. If labels are concealed or access is difficult, let them inspect the installation. Do not remove covers or insulation just to obtain photographs for an online quotation.

Size around demand and recovery

Household size alone is an incomplete description of demand. Two people taking long showers at the same time may need a different arrangement from a larger household whose usage is spread throughout the day. Baths, shower flow rates and the time available to reheat stored water all belong in the discussion.

Ask the designer to explain the selected capacity and recovery assumptions. Too little usable storage can reproduce your existing complaint; additional capacity without a clear purpose takes space and may add cost. The goal is a system that meets the identified pattern of use, not automatically the largest cylinder that fits.

Check future heating compatibility early

If a heat pump, solar thermal system or other change is being considered, tell the installer before the cylinder is specified. Compatibility depends on the actual heating source and cylinder design. A product described casually as “future-proof” still needs its intended use and limitations explained.

You may decide to retain the current heat source and replace only what is necessary now. That is a legitimate project choice when the trade-offs are understood. Ask which future changes would require additional work, rather than accepting a general assurance that every later system can connect to the same cylinder.

Measure the journey as well as the cupboard

Installation access includes stairs, turns, doors and the route for removing the existing vessel. The final position needs room for pipe connections and future maintenance. A cylinder that fits tightly inside a cupboard can still be unsuitable if important components cannot be serviced.

Clarify responsibility for moving shelving, removing boxing, lifting finishes and making good afterwards. In a flat, identify lift restrictions, communal working rules and the authority needed for alterations. If discharge pipework or the water supply needs a different route, understand that work before comparing final prices.

Treat safety and competence as part of the specification

For unvented replacement, ask how the installation will comply with applicable hot water safety requirements and which building-control route will be used. Approved Document G is the relevant England guidance. The proposal should address the complete safety arrangement and discharge route, not only the cylinder model.

Check who will undertake cylinder, electrical and any gas work. Competence in one field does not automatically cover the others. Never accept a plan that blocks a relief discharge or bypasses a safety control to reuse an unsuitable installation. Existing components should be assessed for compatibility and condition rather than assumed reusable.

Compare proposals on the same basis

Ask each proposal to name the cylinder type and capacity, necessary pipework, controls, removal of old equipment, commissioning and exclusions. Establish whether electrical work, access work and decoration are included. A lower headline figure can cover a narrower scope, so the written detail matters more than a bare total.

Clarify how unexpected findings will be handled and who approves additional work. Obtain product warranty terms and maintenance conditions for the actual selection. Do not assume that every component shares the vessel’s warranty duration or that a manufacturer warranty covers unrelated installation or access costs.

Agree disruption and handover before work starts

Discuss the expected period without hot water after the installation scope is established. Let the installer know about tenants, vulnerable occupants and business needs. A complex relocation or a shared supply can require arrangements beyond a straightforward replacement in an accessible cupboard.

At handover, ask for the relevant commissioning and installation records, model information and a demonstration of normal user controls. Keep the maintenance instructions and warranty documents together. Confirm how to report unexpected discharge or leakage, and avoid treating a new cylinder as equipment that never needs further attention.

Do I have to replace the boiler as well?
Not necessarily. The existing heat source can remain where compatible and in suitable condition. Ask for a separate explanation if both replacements are proposed.
