TRV stuck or not working: what to check
A TRV that appears stuck may have a problem with its control head or valve mechanism, but a cold radiator can also be caused by the heating schedule, another valve or poor circulation. Start with ordinary control checks and compare other radiators. Do not force the valve pin, loosen pipe connections or open the valve body to try to restore heat.

A conventional thermostatic radiator valve senses the temperature around its head and adjusts water flow through that radiator. Its numbers represent settings for room temperature, not a direct setting for the temperature of the metal panel. The exact scale depends on the model, so use its instructions rather than assuming that every valve has identical settings.
It is normal for a radiator to cool when the room has reached the chosen temperature. A conventional TRV does not independently switch the boiler on. A smart radiator control can work differently as part of a connected system, depending on its compatibility and configuration. Identify which type you have before interpreting a cold radiator as a seized valve.
Check whether the heating is actually asking for heat
Look at the normal programmer or thermostat display. Is the heating scheduled to run, and is the room thermostat calling for a warmer temperature? If the main control has already been satisfied, opening one ordinary radiator valve will not necessarily restart the heat source.
Compare the affected room with others during a normal heating period. If all radiators are cold, focus the enquiry on the system as a whole. If several are warm and only one remains cold, a local valve or circulation issue is more plausible. This comparison narrows the investigation; it is not proof that a new TRV is required.
Safe checks at the radiator
Check the position of the normal dial without forcing it. A low or frost setting can explain why a radiator has not opened when expected. Make one ordinary adjustment following the manufacturer’s instructions, then allow the heating to run before judging the result. Repeatedly turning between extremes makes the response harder to interpret.
Look for a curtain, sofa or radiator cover trapping warmth around the sensing head. The air beside the valve can be warmer than the occupied part of the room. Also look for visible moisture or staining without touching hot fittings. A valve that is leaking needs a different response from a dry valve whose control is simply ineffective.

Why forcing the pin is not a good first step
Online advice often jumps straight to removing the head and pushing a pin. Valve designs and conditions differ, and it is easy to confuse a head fixing with a water-containing component. A stiff or corroded assembly may also be more fragile than it looks. Do not pull the pin with pliers, strike the valve or press tools hard into the mechanism.
If the dial will not move normally, the head is damaged or you are uncertain what a fixing does, stop there. An engineer can distinguish a head fault from a valve-body problem and assess the connections before working on it. Do not loosen gland nuts, unions or other fittings to experiment; heating water may be hot and under pressure.
A TRV is not reliable emergency isolation for a leaking radiator. If water is escaping, report the leak and keep away from affected electrics. Do not remove the radiator or valve yourself.
When the radiator stays hot on a low setting
A room that keeps overheating can indicate a control head that is not acting on the valve correctly or a mechanism that is not shutting as expected. It can also reflect the setting, sensor location or installation arrangement. The relevant question is whether the room continues to heat beyond the requested condition, not whether the radiator is still warm immediately after turning the dial.
Record the setting and what happens over a normal heating cycle. With smart controls, check the user-facing schedule, battery indication and any connection message in the app or display. Follow the device’s own user instructions. Repeated resets, unrelated app changes or removing components can erase useful clues without solving the underlying issue.
When a new valve would not solve it
The lockshield valve at the opposite end, trapped air, restricted pipework and an imbalance between radiators may affect flow. A circulation or control problem elsewhere can also leave a room cold. A cold section of a radiator does not establish one cause with enough certainty to recommend a replacement or system treatment from a photograph.
This matters when deciding what to book. Ask for a heating fault investigation if the cause is unknown, rather than instructing a valve replacement solely because the room is cold. If the fault was already diagnosed during an earlier visit, share that report and the valve details so the next appointment can focus on the agreed repair.
Head replacement, valve replacement or a wider repair?
A compatible replacement head may be sufficient when the head alone has failed. Compatibility depends on the connection and model, not just appearance. If the water-containing valve body needs replacement, the engineer must consider isolation or draining, the condition of adjacent connections and the work required to restore the system afterwards.
A wider investigation may be more useful where several rooms are affected or the symptom returns after previous valve work. Ask what evidence supports the proposed repair and whether the price includes restoring operation and checking the radiator. Keep any removed parts and product information available until the agreed work has been completed and explained.

- Is a cold radiator always a stuck TRV?
- No. The heating may not be calling for heat, or another part of the system may restrict circulation. Check normal settings and compare other rooms before assuming the valve has failed.
- Should I spray lubricant into the valve?
- Do not introduce products into the mechanism unless the manufacturer specifically permits them for that model. An unsuitable product or an attempt to dismantle a wet fitting can create another problem.
- Can a smart TRV fix an existing cold radiator?
- A smart head changes the control arrangement; it does not repair a faulty valve body or restricted water flow. Establish why the radiator is cold before buying a control upgrade.
- What if the valve has started dripping?
- Treat it as a leak and arrange a repair. Keep hot water away from people and electrics, and do not tighten random nuts or depend on the temperature dial as a safe repair isolation.
